Significant Weather Event – Update: December 26, 2022

December 26, 2022 (Muskoka, ON) – The District of Muskoka and partner municipalities are encouraging families to clear 911 signs, so property numbers are visible, and be a “Hydrant Hero” in their neighbourhoods this winter.

As we continue shovel, snowblow and take a few moments to catch our breath – we recognize that this is the most significant snowfall in our memory. District crews are calling this holiday season the “2022 Muskoka SnowGlobe”.

Snow has completely covered, and buried us in Muskoka. Muskoka has nearly 2100 hydrants – just like a car parked in front of a hydrant, snow can cover them, block access and cause delays in an emergency. This amount of snow means a specialized hero is needed in communities.

Wanted: Hydrant Heroes

The District is encouraging families to assign a “Hydrant Hero” –  one who can help our Public Works crews and emergency services teams by keeping 1.5 metres clear around their neighbourhood hydrant. These heroes are very important in helping monitor snow levels around their local hydrant and shoveling snow away to prevent a buildup.

Timing is critical in times of emergency – here’s how you and your family can help:

  • Take a moment to clear your 911 number and make sure it’s visible from the roadway – this way, Muskoka Paramedic Services can identify your location quicker. If you have an emergency, make sure Paramedics can access your home (both inside and out), and clear any obstacles.
  • Have a fire hydrant in your neighbourhood? Assign a “Hydrant Hero” in your family to check on it, ensure it’s visible and keep access available for crews who need it.

We rely on fire hydrants for many reasons and we all know their importance when there’s a fire. Timing is critical. If a hydrant is buried – every second wasted shoveling it out is valuable time that could drastically impact the outcome if you need help.

The District of Muskoka and our partner municipalities are actively clearing snow and continuing snow removal efforts. We appreciate the continued patience, support and understanding of our community.

The Significant Weather Event for the District of Muskoka remains in effect on December 26, 2022.
